Hanko — Hangö in Swedish — occupies a peculiar place in Finnish memory: the peninsula was leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base under the 1940 Moscow Peace Treaty, a humiliating concession forced after the Winter War. Soviet forces evacuated in late 1941 as German pressure mounted, and Finland quietly reclaimed it.
