Schneidemühl — now Piła in northwestern Poland — was a Prussian garrison town whose municipal administration issued this note during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1922, when Reichsbank currency was becoming functionally useless faster than it could be printed. Municipal and commercial issuers across Germany filled the gap with Notgeld, and Stadt Schneidemühl was one of hundreds of local authorities legally permitted to do so under emergency provisions.

The guilloche underprint is the only meaningful deterrent against counterfeiting here — a reasonable precaution given that Notgeld forgery was a documented problem in this period, particularly with denominations that carried real purchasing power, however briefly.
