Turkmenistan's 2020 banknote series was issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the country's permanent neutrality status, recognised by the United Nations in 1995 — an unusual political occasion for a currency redesign, and one that reflects the Turkmen government's habit of using banknotes as instruments of national narrative.
