Additional information

Piri Reis completed his famous world map in 1513, and its depiction of the South American coastline with striking accuracy — drawn nearly two decades before European explorers had fully charted it — has fueled genuine scholarly debate and considerable pseudohistorical speculation ever since. The Ottoman admiral compiled it from roughly twenty source charts, including what he claimed were maps used by Columbus himself.

This coin was issued on the map's 500th anniversary.
