Grigore Ureche was the 17th-century Moldavian chronicler whose Letopisețul Țării Moldovei remains the earliest surviving prose chronicle of the Moldavian principality, covering the period from the founding of the state through 1594. He is also the source of the oft-quoted observation that Moldavians, Wallachians, and Transylvanians share Latin origins — a claim that became politically loaded across several centuries of Romanian national formation.
Moldova issued several silver commemoratives in this KM#31 series honoring cultural figures, part of a broader post-independence effort to establish a distinct Moldovan historical identity separate from Romanian nationalist narratives — an irony given Ureche's own role in pan-Romanian cultural arguments.
