| Reverse description | Full equestrian effigy of Carol I as a medieval Romanian ruler, depicted in traditional princely robes and cloak, mounted on a powerfully modelled horse striding to the right. The figure is rendered in bold high relief, evoking the medieval Moldavian and Wallachian princes, with the horse's mane and tail finely detailed. The curved legend CAROL I DOMNUL ROMANIEI arcs around the upper left periphery, while the denomination 50 LEI appears vertically to the right. The scene is set on a ground line, and the coin is bordered by a beaded rim. |

Struck to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Carol I's reign and Romania's 1881 elevation to a kingdom, this issue was never intended for ordinary circulation. It was produced in limited quantities as a prestige piece distributed at the jubilee exhibitions held in Bucharest that year — the same events that introduced Romania's emerging industrial ambitions to a European audience.
Fr#6 specimens turn up overwhelmingly in mint state for precisely that reason.
