Reverse description The reverse depicts a heraldic equestrian effigy of Bogdan I, founder of the Principality of Moldavia, rendered in a medieval seal-style relief. The crowned ruler is shown in three-quarter view astride a rearing horse, brandishing a raised sword in his right hand and bearing a shield charged with the Moldavian auroch's head device in his left. The image is derived from a historical princely seal of Bogdan I. The curved legend BOGDAN ÎNTEMEIETORUL arcs along the upper left periphery in raised Latin characters against the deeply mirrored proof field.

Additional information

Bogdan I founded the Principality of Moldavia around 1359 after leading a revolt against Hungarian suzerainty and crossing the Carpathians from Maramureș with a force of Vlach settlers. He ruled until roughly 1365, long enough to establish the principality's independence but not long enough to leave many datable records — which is why his exact dates remain contested among Romanian and Moldovan historians to this day.
