Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu was among the most restlessly productive intellectuals of 19th-century Romania — philologist, historian, playwright, and folklorist simultaneously, at a time when those disciplines were still being defined in the region. His magnum opus, the etymological dictionary *Etymologicum Magnum Romaniae*, was left unfinished at his death in 1907, consumed in part by years he spent attempting to communicate with his deceased daughter Iulia through spiritualist séances — a fixation that cost him the final productive decade of his career.
Moldova's commemorative silver program has consistently used the 50 Lei denomination for figures claimed by both Romanian and Moldovan cultural heritage. Hasdeu was born in Cristești, in what is now the Republic of Moldova.
