| Reverse description | The gold-plated central disc displays conjoined busts of President Chen Shui-bian (right) and Vice President Lu Hsiu-lien (left), both facing slightly forward in a contemporary portrait style, with their respective titles and names inscribed in Chinese characters to their sides. The date '2004' appears in a cartouche at the base of the gold centre. The silver-plated outer ring carries Chinese characters arching across the top and the English legend 'Inauguration of the 11th President · Vice President of the Republic of China' running along the lower portion of the ring, flanked by decorative rosette ornaments. |

The 2004 Malawian 50 Kwacha bimetallic series was part of a wave of large-format collector issues produced by smaller nations under licensing arrangements with private minting companies — in this case themed around the Republic of China (Taiwan), almost certainly tied to diplomatic and financial relations between Taipei and Lilongwe. Malawi maintained formal recognition of the ROC rather than the PRC for much of this period, one of a shrinking number of African states to do so.
At 141 grams and 65mm, these were never intended for circulation.
