Thomas De La Rue printed this series across a five-year window as Malawi's economy lurched through a difficult structural adjustment period — the IMF's conditions on the Banda government forced a series of currency reforms that affected denomination planning throughout the early 1990s. The 50 Kwacha sat at the top of the circulating range for most of this issue's life, a position that shifted as inflation eroded its practical purchasing weight.

Watermark-only security was already conservative for De La Rue at this period, when more complex features were available on request. Budget constraints almost certainly drove that choice.
