Agnes of Bohemia — thirteenth-century Přemyslid princess turned Franciscan abbess — waited 750 years for canonization. When John Paul II finally elevated her in November 1989, the ceremony in Rome coincided almost exactly with the Velvet Revolution unfolding in Prague. The Czechoslovak state mint had this coin in planning before the communist government fell; it was completed under entirely different political circumstances than those that commissioned it.
