Waldzell is a small market commune in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal emergency money — Notgeld — issued between roughly 1919 and 1921 when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation following the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Thousands of Austrian towns and villages issued their own paper, and the Gemeinde Waldzell was one among hundreds in the Innviertel region alone.
