D. über 50 Heller.' appears in bold at the top, followed by a six-line redemption text in Fraktur script advising that the municipality issued interest-free Kassenscheine totalling 100,000 Kronen to alleviate the small-change shortage, redeemable at the municipal cashier between 16 and 30 September 1920. Stein an der Donau — now effectively merged with Krems — issued its own emergency small change during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the early postwar years. These Notgeld issues were a municipal necessity, not a novelty: the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left provincial towns scrambling to fill the vacuum left by vanishing copper and nickel coinage.
J. Faber in nearby Krems handled the printing, a straightforward local arrangement common among Lower Austrian municipalities of the period.
