D. über 50 Heller.' appears in bold at the top, followed by a six-line redemption text in Fraktur script advising that the municipality issued interest-free Kassenscheine totalling 100,000 Kronen to alleviate the small-change shortage, redeemable at the municipal cashier between 16 and 30 September 1920. The denomination 'Fünfzig Heller.' is set in large decorative Gothic script at the foot, with the printer's imprint 'J. Faber, Krems' below. |

Stein an der Donau — now effectively merged with Krems — issued its own emergency small change during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the early postwar years. These Notgeld issues were a municipal necessity, not a novelty: the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left provincial towns scrambling to fill the vacuum left by vanishing copper and nickel coinage.
J. Faber in nearby Krems handled the printing, a straightforward local arrangement common among Lower Austrian municipalities of the period.
