Siezenheim is a small agricultural settlement west of Salzburg city, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small-change notes — Notgeld — to compensate for the acute coin shortage that persisted well after the First World War. The four signatures here, including Bürgermeister Leonhard Eisl and three named Gemeinderäte, were a legal requirement for validity, making each note effectively a witnessed municipal document rather than a printed instrument in the conventional banking sense.
Buchdruckerei Zaunrith was a Salzburg commercial printer, not a security press. These notes were never meant to last.
