Pfarrkirchen im Mühlkreis is a small Upper Austrian village, and this 50 Heller Notgeld was issued in 1920 as part of the postwar small-change crisis that left Austrian municipalities printing their own emergency currency well into the early 1920s. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system after 1918 created a severe shortage of low-denomination coin, and hundreds of communes — including ones far too small to have any conventional banking infrastructure — were authorized to fill the gap. L. Haase of Linz was one of the regional printers who handled a high volume of these local commissions.
