| 表面の説明 | Printed in brown and violet, the obverse is centred on a large oval vignette bearing the denomination numeral '50' within a circular cartouche, flanked by the text 'heller' on either side, all set against a dark brown ground. Above, the issuing authority is identified in Gothic blackletter script as 'Gutschein der Stadtgemeinde Melk a.D.' with the value stated below, while the validity clause and counterfeiting warning appear in smaller Gothic script at the foot. The outer border is formed by an Art Nouveau-style violet underprint of swirling foliate scrollwork, with oval denomination medallions in the four corners. |

Melk's 50 Heller notgeld of 1920 belongs to the second wave of Austrian municipal emergency currency — issued not during the wartime shortages of 1914–1918 but in the chaotic deflationary aftermath, when coin of small denomination had effectively vanished from everyday commerce. The newly formed Republic of Austria was still stabilizing its monetary framework, and hundreds of municipalities filled the gap themselves.
The Jaksc/Pick reference JPR0605II places this in the second series for Melk, meaning the town had already issued notgeld previously and returned to the press for additional denominations or replacement stock.
