Meggenhofen is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921. With the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system and chronic small-change shortages, thousands of towns — including ones far too small to have any business issuing currency — printed their own emergency money. Meggenhofen had a population that barely warranted a post office, let alone a note-issuing authority.
The Jaksch cataloguing designation places this firmly in the Upper Austrian regional series. Single-issue, single-denomination — no continuation series followed.
