Below the verse, the issuer name and denomination are restated in large Fraktur lettering as "Gutschein der Stadtgemeinde Mautern a.d.D. über 50 Heller", followed by the validity and redemption period and the anti-counterfeiting warning "Nachahmung strafbar". Mautern an der Donau is a small market town in Lower Austria directly across the Danube from Krems, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the postwar Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities in 1920. With the old Habsburg crown collapsing in purchasing power and the new Austrian Republic struggling to maintain small-denomination coinage in circulation, hundreds of towns and communes printed their own emergency fractional notes. Mautern was one of the smaller issuers — the series was modest in scope and almost certainly never circulated far beyond the town itself.
The Jaksch/Pick reference IIc designation indicates a specific paper or print variant within the Mautern series, suggesting at least three distinguishable states exist.
