Mautern an der Donau is a small market town in Lower Austria directly across the Danube from Krems, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the postwar Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities in 1920. With the old Habsburg crown collapsing in purchasing power and the new Austrian Republic struggling to maintain small-denomination coinage in circulation, hundreds of towns and communes printed their own emergency fractional notes. Mautern was one of the smaller issuers — the series was modest in scope and almost certainly never circulated far beyond the town itself.
The Jaksch/Pick reference IIc designation indicates a specific paper or print variant within the Mautern series, suggesting at least three distinguishable states exist.
