Hausmening is a small village in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similarly modest municipalities, it issued emergency scrip — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in World War I. The 50 Heller denomination was among the most common face values in this wave of local issues, intended purely to substitute for hoarded small change rather than to function as any form of regional currency proper.
F. Seltenberg of Vienna was a commercial printer who handled a considerable volume of these municipal commissions. The practical irony of centralized printing for decentralized emergency money was lost on no one at the time.
