Göttweig Abbey issued a series of small-denomination Heller notes in 1920 as part of the broader Austrian Notgeld wave — a period when the post-war collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left rural communities, monasteries, and local businesses printing their own emergency scrip to cover the chronic shortage of small change. The Kellerstube designation is specific: this was the wine cellar operation of the abbey, one of the oldest continuously run monastic cellars in Lower Austria, suggesting the note may have functioned partly as a hospitality token within that commercial context.
A. Blaschke's design work appears across several Austrian Notgeld issues of this period. The signature of P. Ludwig Koller places the authorization within the abbey's own administrative hierarchy rather than any civil authority.
