Göttweig Abbey, a Benedictine monastery perched above the Danube in Lower Austria, issued this 50 Heller note as a Notgeld piece during the postwar currency chaos that followed the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The issuer — the abbey's cellar tavern, the Kellerstube — tells you something specific: these small denominations were primarily functional within the monastery's own commercial sphere, covering transactions where small change had simply vanished from circulation.
The printed date of 30 April 1945 on catalog records almost certainly refers to a documentation or registry date, not production — 1920 Notgeld was a discrete Austrian phenomenon, and the JPR reference confirms the series placement.
