Furth bei Göttweig is a small market commune in Lower Austria, sitting directly below the Benedictine abbey of Göttweig — one of the oldest monasteries in the region. This note is a Notgeld issue, part of the massive wave of emergency municipal currency that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1922 as postwar inflation and coin shortages left local economies functionally paralyzed.
Siegfried Stoitzner was a Vienna-trained painter with genuine artistic credentials, and his involvement in Notgeld design was not unusual for the period — the genre attracted serious artists precisely because municipalities competed for collectible, visually distinctive issues. Josef Faber in Krems handled regional printing work throughout the Lower Austrian Notgeld boom.
