Bruck-Waasen is a small Upper Austrian municipality on the Traun river, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austria between 1919 and 1921 — a period when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted down in the chaos following the collapse of the Habsburg empire. Thousands of Austrian communes issued their own emergency paper, and the quality varied enormously.
What separates many Upper Austrian issues from the mass of crude municipal scrip is local artistic involvement. The designer credit to Ascha Fluss and engraver H. Doblmaier suggests genuine regional craft rather than a generic print-house template — uncommon at this denomination and from a locality this small. Wohlmair's signature as municipal authority appears on the face.
