Spitz an der Donau issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the post-WWI collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monetary system, when coin shortages made small denomination exchange nearly impossible across much of rural Austria. These hyperlocal issues were authorized at the municipal level, printed in enormous variety, and often ran for only a few months before federal stabilization efforts rendered them redundant.
By 1920, Notgeld had become as much a collector phenomenon as a functional currency. Many municipalities printed attractive series specifically to sell to collectors, boosting local revenue. Whether Spitz issued these purely out of necessity or partly with that market in mind is difficult to establish with certainty.
