The "black indexes" designation refers to the serial numbering system used to track this series internally — a classification that distinguishes it from the later red-indexed issues and matters more to Banque de France archivists than it might initially seem to collectors. The type ran across a politically turbulent span: issued from 1868 under the Second Empire, it survived the Franco-Prussian War, the Commune, and the early years of the Third Republic without a redesign.
Pannemaker was primarily a reproductive wood engraver of considerable reputation, better known for translating paintings into print. His presence on a banknote plate is unusual enough to be worth noting.
