The Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale et du Cameroun was itself a transitional institution — created to manage the CFA franc zone as France's equatorial colonies moved toward independence, it would be dissolved and replaced by the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale by 1972.
