Additional information

Algeria's postwar coinage underwent a quiet but deliberate transition in this period, as the Banque de l'Algérie — still operating as a colonial institution under French authority — moved away from the bronze and zinc emergency issues forced on the territory during the Occupation years. The shift to copper-nickel for higher denominations reflected both material stabilization and an attempt to restore monetary credibility after wartime shortages had badly eroded public confidence in circulating coinage.

Just eight years after this piece was struck, the Banque de l'Algérie would be dissolved following independence, making the late colonial issues of 1949 among the final expressions of a monetary apparatus that had operated since 1851.
