In the foreground, a helmeted gladiator armed with a rectangular shield faces a rearing lion in a dramatic confrontational scene, evoking the arena spectacles of ancient Rome. The curved legend CENTRE HISTORIQUE DE ROME and CENTRO STORICO DI ROMA arcs along the upper periphery in both French and Italian. Part of the Monnaie de Paris "Monuments of Europe" program, this issue continues a long-running series of gold and silver pieces pairing French minting with iconic non-French architecture — an arrangement that has occasionally raised eyebrows among Italian numismatic institutions who feel Rome's monuments belong on Roman coins. The Colosseum, completed under Titus in 80 AD, was inaugurated with 100 days of games.
