Part of the Monnaie de Paris "Monuments of Europe" program, this issue continues a long-running series of gold and silver pieces pairing French minting with iconic non-French architecture — an arrangement that has occasionally raised eyebrows among Italian numismatic institutions who feel Rome's monuments belong on Roman coins. The Colosseum, completed under Titus in 80 AD, was inaugurated with 100 days of games.
