| 裏面の説明 | The reverse depicts two Supermarine Spitfire aircraft in dynamic flight, the iconic single-seat fighter planes instrumental in the Royal Air Force's victory during the Battle of Britain in 1940. The aircraft are rendered in fine relief detail, capturing the distinctive elliptical wing profile of the Spitfire. A bilingual commemorative legend encircles the design, inscribed in both French and English to honor the 80th anniversary of the historic battle. The year '2020' appears as part of the reverse inscription. |

Issued as part of Monnaie de Paris's ongoing "Plane Legends" series, this piece commemorates the Supermarine Spitfire, the elliptical-winged fighter that became the defining British aircraft of the Second World War. The Spitfire's development was almost derailed entirely when Reginald Mitchell, its chief designer, died of cancer in 1937 — two years before the aircraft entered RAF service. Production was later dispersed across dozens of small workshops and garages across southern England after the Supermarine factory in Southampton was destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing in September 1940.
