Pope Clement XI, who reigned from 1700 to 1721, is best remembered numismatically for the papal bull Unigenitus issued in 1713, which condemned Jansenism and triggered a constitutional crisis in France that outlawed the bull and split the French church for decades. His pontificate also saw the War of Spanish Succession upend European Catholic politics, leaving him diplomatically isolated by its end.
This 2021 Vatican commemorative falls within a Francis-era series revisiting significant papal deaths at their tricentennials. Clement XI died on March 19, 1721.
