| Reverse description | The reverse presents a three-quarter-length effigy of Pope Clement XI facing slightly right, depicted wearing pontifical vestments including a mozzetta and saturno hat, rendered in a classical engraving style. Two winged putti flank the lower portion of the composition, jointly supporting a papal shield. The circular legend CITTA' DEL VATICANO arcs across the upper field, with CLEMENS XI P.M. and the regnal dates 1700–1721 distributed on either side of the portrait. The denomination 50 EURO and the Rome mint mark R appear prominently in the field. |

| Additional information |
Pope Clement XI, who reigned from 1700 to 1721, is best remembered numismatically for the papal bull Unigenitus issued in 1713, which condemned Jansenism and triggered a constitutional crisis in France that outlawed the bull and split the French church for decades. His pontificate also saw the War of Spanish Succession upend European Catholic politics, leaving him diplomatically isolated by its end.
This 2021 Vatican commemorative falls within a Francis-era series revisiting significant papal deaths at their tricentennials. Clement XI died on March 19, 1721.
