The Samobor Carnival is one of the oldest continuously held carnival celebrations in Croatia, with documented roots stretching back to 1827. It survived two world wars and Yugoslav-era political pressures that suppressed many regional folk traditions, emerging in the post-independence period as a point of deliberate cultural recovery. The Croatian National Bank has issued commemorative gold pieces tied to intangible cultural heritage with increasing regularity since the euro adoption in January 2023 — this is among the earliest such issues denominated in euros rather than kuna.
