Part of Austria's "Philosophy" series, this coin was issued to honor Sigmund Freud's concept of expectation as a psychological state — the anticipation of pleasure as itself a form of satisfaction. The series drew on Vienna's extraordinary intellectual heritage, a city that produced not just Freud but Wittgenstein, Popper, and the entire Vienna Circle within a few decades of one another.
The .986 fineness is marginally purer than the standard .900 gold used in most European bullion issues of the 20th century, a deliberate choice by the Austrian Mint to position the Philosophy series as premium collectibles rather than circulatable commemoratives.
