Luxembourg's euro coinage was issued under Grand Duke Henri, who had only assumed the throne in October 2000 following the abdication of his father Jean. The "1st map" designation distinguishes this from the post-2007 reverse type, when all eurozone member states updated their common-side designs to include the full EU map rather than the original fifteen-member outline — a change prompted by the accession of ten new member states in 2004.
Nordic gold's tendency toward a distinctly orange tint causes these pieces to develop a characteristic surface tone with age that many collectors find objectionable.
