Reverse description The common reverse design, created by Luc Luycx, displays a relief map of Europe occupying the left portion of the field, showing the continental landmass with national borders subtly indicated. Twelve five-pointed stars, symbolising European unity, arc around the left periphery interspersed with fine vertical lines. The large numeral '50' dominates the right half of the field, with the two-line legend EURO / CENT inscribed below in a bold serif typeface. The engraver's initials 'LL' appear discreetly in the lower right field.

Additional information

Bulgaria has been a European Union member since 2007 but remains outside the eurozone, still issuing lev under its own central bank. These euro cent coins are struck in anticipation of eventual eurozone accession, which as of the most recent convergence reports has not yet met all criteria — inflation targeting in particular has posed recurring difficulties. The coins are legal tender in waiting, essentially.
