Obverse description The obverse features an equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, derived from the celebrated bronze original housed on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, depicted in three-quarter view facing right. The figure is rendered with fine sculptural detail, the emperor shown in classical Roman robes with his right arm extended in a gesture of authority. Beneath the horse, a stylised geometric latticework pattern radiates outward, representing Italy's artistic and cultural heritage and serving as the distinctive design element of engraver Roberto Mauri. The mint mark 'R' appears to the left of the horse, with the monogram of the Italian Republic 'RI' to the right, and twelve five-pointed stars encircle the entire composition along the rim. The issue year is inscribed at the base of the design in the lower field.
