Cape Verde's endemic subspecies of the red kite (Milvus milvus fasciicauda) was almost certainly extinct by the time this coin was issued — the last confirmed sightings date to the 1980s, with the population on Santiago having collapsed due to poisoning and habitat loss. The Banco de Cabo Verde issued this piece as part of a broader wildlife conservation series, though the bird it memorializes had almost no chance of recovery by 2006.
