Obverse description The national coat of arms of Cape Verde is depicted in the centre of the field, featuring a triangle surmounted by a torch, set within a circular legend reading REPÚBLICA DE CABO VERDE, and flanked by ten five-pointed stars arranged in an arc. Below the arms, two crossed olive branches tied at the base extend symmetrically across the lower field. The legend CABO VERDE arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 50 ESCUDOS is inscribed in large block letters along the lower portion of the field.

Reverse description A finely detailed effigy of a Red Kite (Milvus milvus) is rendered in high relief at the centre-right of the field, depicted perched on a branch and facing left, with intricately engraved plumage covering the wings, breast, and tail. The inscription Red Kite appears in elegant script to the left of the bird in the field. The date 2006 is engraved in the lower exergual area in bold numerals. The mirror-polished proof fields provide strong contrast against the frosted relief of the bird design.

Additional information

Cape Verde's endemic subspecies of the red kite (Milvus milvus fasciicauda) was almost certainly extinct by the time this coin was issued — the last confirmed sightings date to the 1980s, with the population on Santiago having collapsed due to poisoning and habitat loss. The Banco de Cabo Verde issued this piece as part of a broader wildlife conservation series, though the bird it memorializes had almost no chance of recovery by 2006.
