By 1973, Angola was entering the fourth year of its most intense phase of anti-colonial war, with MPLA, FNLA, and UNITA all active against Portuguese forces. The Banco de Angola continued issuing notes under Lisbon's authority, and this 50 Escudos was among the last series printed before the April 1974 coup in Portugal that set decolonization in motion. Independence followed in November 1975, after which the escudo was replaced by the kwanza.
Bradbury Wilkinson had printed Angolan issues for decades by this point, working from their New Malden facility in Surrey. The relationship was typical of how Lisbon managed colonial currency — contracted to a reputable British security printer rather than handled domestically.
