Greece established its own banknote printing facility in Holargos — a suburb northeast of Athens — in 1941, largely to reduce dependence on foreign printers during wartime. By 1964, the operation was fully capable of producing the entire drachma series domestically, and this note is one of the cleaner examples of that self-sufficiency: designer and engraver both Greek nationals working under a Greek institution.
Lambros Orfanos trained in the intaglio tradition and engraved several notes in this postwar series. A watermark-only security specification was modest even by early 1960s standards, reflecting cost decisions rather than any technical limitation of the Holargos facility.
