The IL-2 Shturmovik was produced in greater numbers than any other military aircraft in history — over 36,000 built — and Stalin reportedly sent a furious telegram to factory directors in 1941 warning that the Red Army needed the aircraft "like air, like bread." The Marshall Islands ran an extensive commemorative program throughout the early 1990s targeting the collector market directly, with this piece among dozens issued under a licensing arrangement that had no connection to the subjects depicted beyond the royalty structure.
