The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in 1986 following the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which granted the republic control over its own currency and postal arrangements. The FW 190 issue belongs to a substantial series commemorating WWII aircraft, released in the early 1990s when the commemorative coin market was aggressively targeting collectors through direct-mail marketing — mintages were rarely restricted, and secondary market values have reflected that ever since.
The Focke-Wulf 190 itself entered Luftwaffe service in 1941 and briefly outclassed the Spitfire Mk V until the Mk IX arrived in 1942 to restore parity.
