The Marshall Islands began issuing collector coinage in 1986 under a licensing arrangement that effectively outsourced its numismatic program to a private firm, the Pobjoy Mint and later others. By the early 1990s the program had expanded aggressively into thematic issues with little connection to Marshallese history or culture. This Venus piece is one of dozens of such coins produced for the international collector market during that period, sold primarily through mail-order dealers and Franklin Mint-style direct marketing channels rather than through any domestic circulation.
