Additional information

The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative dollars in the late 1980s under a licensing arrangement that essentially turned the mint program into a collecting product rather than a monetary one — these pieces were never intended to circulate. The Galera Veneziana, or Venetian war galley, was the dominant naval vessel of the Mediterranean from roughly the 13th through the 16th century, propelled by oarsmen arranged in the alla sensile system before the more powerful scaloccio rowing method displaced it.

Venice maintained strict state control over galley construction through the Arsenale, one of the largest industrial complexes in pre-modern Europe.
