| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse displays the official seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands at center, depicting a traditional Marshallese stick chart in the lower field flanked by a frigate bird with outstretched wings, a sailing canoe to the right, a coconut palm to the left, and a radiant sun at top center. Crossed behind the central motif are a navigator's staff and a traditional tool. A dirigible appears in the upper left field and a fishing net in the upper right. The outer border consists of a decorative chain-link ring. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination $50 to the left and the date 1989 to the right, while the Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN curves along the lower border. The word SEAL appears in a cartouche at the base of the central device. |

The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in 1986 following the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which granted the republic self-governance while retaining American defense obligations. The 1989 "First Rendezvous in Space" issue commemorates the 1965 Gemini 6 and Gemini 7 mission, during which astronauts Wally Schirra and Frank Borman's crews maneuvered to within one foot of each other — the first time two crewed spacecraft had ever achieved proximity in orbit.
Struck by the U.S. Mint under contract, the series was produced primarily for the collector market rather than circulation.
