The Marshall Islands entered the commemorative coin market in 1989 with considerable aggression, issuing a wave of $50 pieces timed to major anniversaries. This one marks twenty years since Apollo 11, struck the same year NASA was celebrating the mission with renewed public programming. The Republic had only formally achieved its current political status under the Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986, making American space achievement an unsurprising early subject.
These were sold directly to collectors through mail-order channels and saw essentially no circulation.
