Issued in 1989, this coin predates any actual Mars landing by decades — NASA's first successful Mars surface missions were the Viking landers of 1976, and no crewed landing has occurred to date. The Marshall Islands' aggressive commemorative program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was explicitly designed to generate foreign currency revenue rather than serve domestic circulation, a strategy common among small Pacific island nations during that period. The coins were marketed directly to collectors through international dealers, bypassing normal numismatic channels entirely.
